Draft Horse & Pony Pulling

The sport of horse pulling originated when horses were still used for daily farm work. Farmers would challenge one another to see whose horse or team could pull the most weight. Since then, horse pulling has evolved into an organized sport with teams of equine athletes.

Horses that are used for horse pulling are generally not used for work on the farm. Instead, they are worked regularly to keep their muscles and tendons strong and limber to prevent them from being hurt during competitions.

For more information on how to enter, visit the Open Show Handbook below.

Oxen Pulling

In the 1800's Ox pulling contests began as a friendly competition amongst farmers utilizing various breeds of cattle from their farms which they used to pull equipment, log, and aid in everyday activities until tractors became popular.

The tradition of Oxen pulling contests continues here at the Cornish Fair with rules governed by The New England Association of Ox Teamsters. Each team (pair) of oxen are weighed in at our scale barn and placed into five classes, depending on their total weight. A teamster and assistant have 3 tries to have their  oxen pull a weighted sled 6 feet in a continuous pull in 5 minutes. Premiums are awarded for 8 places in each class.

Oxen pulling is mostly a hobby requiring years of devoted training - from young calves (steers) to adult oxen(4 years) and older. These animals are trained as athletes, having special nutrition, health care, and many hours of training working together as a team.

More information is at the Cornish Fair website under Open Show Handbook.

4-H at the Fair

Through positive youth-adult partnerships, the 4-H program connects youth and adults to their communities, preparing them for work and life. The 4-H program is designed to engage youth and adults in intentional, experiential, and inquiry-based learning experiences.

4-H exhibiting at the fair builds important life skills, most importantly social skills and character development. The fair is a learning ground, where members build lasting friendships, self-confidence, responsibility and sportsmanship, as well as how to deal with loss.

Animal Fence Talks - 4-H members will share their knowledge and expertise about their 4-H animal project at various barn locations throughout the fair. These judged presentations are interactive, as youth engage the public and present their knowledge centered on their animal project.

The 4-H Exhibit Hall in the School house - 4-H members display 4-H projects that they have worked on over the past year. These displays are similar to what is showcased in the open show: Gardening, sewing, photography, art, posters, baking, engineering, forestry... Please view our 4-H Exhibit Hall document for all the details.

Action Exhibits (make and takes) and Demonstrations – are opportunities in which youth present what they know to the public, in an interactive way. These presentations will happen throughout the weekend under the poultry/rabbit tent.

All areas of exhibition by 4-H members age 8-18 are judged. Youth then earn ribbons and premiums for their work. Members age 5 – 7 (known as Clover buds) present only and do not participate in judging.
